Help and advice

There are many people across UCL who can help you understand the support available while you are studying with us.

Where to find help

Talk to your department

Help is available from staff in your academic Department. Each UCL Department is organised differently, so the best place to start is normally your programme’s Moodle site or Student Handbook. These should include contact details for key members of staff, such as Student Advisers, departmental administrators, your Programme Leader, Departmental Tutor and other academic staff.

Your ‘Home’ Department and Faculty are normally responsible for providing support. If you are taking any modules in another UCL Department or Faculty, you can also speak to your Module Organiser about the support available locally.

Talk to your personal tutor

You should also have a named Personal Tutor (sometimes called an ‘Academic Mentor’) who can provide academic support and encouragement, and help to answer any questions that you may have about your programme, teaching or assessments. If you are not sure who your Personal Tutor is, please contact your Department.

Make an appointment with Student Support and Wellbeing Services

UCL Student Support and Wellbeing Services is a team of wellbeing, disability and mental health staff. They provide a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space in which you can discuss any issues that may be affecting your ability to study.

You can make an appointment, attend drop-in sessions or contact them via askUCL. The team also host regular events and activities to help you maintain your wellbeing.

Talk to Students' Union UCL Advice Service

The Students’ Union UCL Advice Service provides a free, confidential and independent advice service run by a trained and experienced team. They can talk to you about concerns that you might have relating to Extenuating Circumstances, Interruptions, SoRAs, Support to Study and other forms of support.

askUCL: our self-help centre and student enquiry service

askUCL includes a wide range of Frequently Asked Questions or, if you can’t find what you’re looking for, you can log an enquiry.
