Student Support and Wellbeing Services can provide potential employers, agencies and other third parties with verification of student status and qualifications for current and former students of UCL.
Verification of student registration, results and qualifications
UCL offers the following services in regard to the confirmation of results and awards for third party verification purposes:
Please note that we are unable to verify the contents of the documents for a third party. Please refer to the Hedd service below for third party verification.
Please note we are unable to complete individual reference request forms, or provide character/academic references. For UCL employee references, please get in touch with UCL HR.
If you are UCL alumni, please use askUCL for further assistance. If you do not have access to askUCL, please call us on +44 (0)20 3108 8836 during our opening hours or email us at studentstatus@ucl.ac.uk.
- Award Certificates
After completing their degree and receiving their results notification with their final results, students will receive an Award Certificate and official transcript.
Students awarded from November 2023 will receive their Award Certificate in both hard copy and digital format: Digital Award Certificates for these students will be available from December and Hard Copy Award Certificates from February 2024. From January 2024, we will also begin to back-issue Digital Award Certificates to students awarded in summer 2023.The hologram and reference number on a Hard Copy Award Certificate are evidence that the Award Certificate is verified by UCL.
UCL partners with Gradintelligence to provide Digital Award Certificates. Documents issued by Gradintelligence are digitally signed with an electronic seal; an advanced electronic signature (AdES) with a qualified electronic certificate (QES). These digital credentials are compliant with international standards and are legally valid, tamper-proof documents which our students and alumni can freely share with third parties, whenever they want, through the Gradintelligence share process. Only Digital Award Certificates shared through the Gradintelligence share process are considered valid.
Students / alumni with a Digital Award Certificate can share these with third parties via their Gradintelligence account and the third party will then receive an email from documentservices@gradintel.com with a document access token. This token can be used to view the Digital Award Certificate for a limited time (this timeframe will be specified in the email).
- Higher Education Degree Datacheck (Hedd) - For Employers or agencies
We offer the Higher Education Degree Datacheck (Hedd) online verification service for employers and agencies to verify UCL awards. Please note that this service is only for third parties.
The system has been developed by Graduate Prospects, in consultation with universities, employers and screening agencies. Funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and launched by Graduate Prospects, Hedd is now being used by many institutions throughout the UK.
The online candidate verification service allows registered enquirers to input data provided by applicants (name, date of birth, institution, year of graduation, qualification classification etc.)
Consent will need to be dated and hand signed within the last 3 months.
How to Register
To make an enquiry, you need to register with Hedd and Select ‘UCL’ from the list of UK higher education institutions and choose the option to 'verify a degree award'. There is a charge of £14 per enquiry. If you require further assistance, please email Heddhelp. You will also be required to upload a consent form.
Making an Enquiry
You’ll need the individual’s name, date of birth, course and qualification. For graduates, you'll also need their year of graduation and degree results. If you require dates of attendance, please request this at the time of making the enquiry.
We recommend that you ask to see the degree certificate, if there is one, and use that as the basis of your verification enquiry, or ask individuals to give you their data as they believe it’s recorded in the student records system. If the information submitted is an exact match to the information held within the student record, your request will automatically be verified. If the information does not match all fields, then the enquiry will go to the team at UCL for manual verification, with a turnaround time of 10 working days.
Due to UK data protection regulations, we are unable to release confirmation of study information to a third party without signed consent from the candidate. Please note that the consent form must be signed and dated no longer than 3 months ago. It also needs to list the candidate’s name in English, and include an original signature.
