Mentee Information
UCL Transition Mentor Program
Introduction to the Transition Mentor Program
When you start an undergraduate course at UCL, you will be assigned to a Transition Group with a Transition Mentor. Your mentor is a student from your program. They will share their university experiences, run weekly mentoring sessions, and offer friendly advice to help you settle in.
Role of a Transition Mentor
A Transition Mentor is a second, third, or fourth-year student from your program. They are your go-to person for questions and support throughout Term One. You will be in a group with about 10 other students. Your mentor will hold weekly sessions. These sessions will cover essential UCL information, careers, first assessments, study skills, and wellbeing.
Meeting Your Transition Mentor
You will meet your Transition Mentor during Welcome Week at the 'Meet your Mentor' (MYM) session. Your department will notify you about this session. If you miss it or are unsure who your mentor is, don't worry—your mentor will also contact you directly. For any uncertainties, you can email transition@ucl.ac.uk.
Programme Structure
The UCL Transition Programme is designed to help first-year students adjust to university life. Mentors meet their mentees during MYM session and will hold 8 in-person weekly sessions throughout the first term. The program ends in November, with a celebration evening in December.
Support from your Mentor
Participation in the Transition Mentor Program is optional but highly encouraged. Not attending sessions will not impact your academic assessment or future opportunities to become a mentor.
Your Transition Mentor can help with various academic and non-academic queries, including:
- Introducing you to other students on your course
- Answering questions about university life
- Explaining university IT platforms and apps
- Sharing insights on coursework and exams
- Offering tips on note-taking, referencing, and using the library
- Providing advice on where to shop, eat, and relax
- Informing you about the Students’ Union
- Giving practical advice on registering with a GP, accessing support services, and getting involved in student life
Any Difficulties?
If you want to change mentor groups, discuss your concerns with your current mentor first. If the issues cannot be resolved, email transition@ucl.ac.uk to request a new mentor. If your mentor is unresponsive, contact the Transition Team for assistance.
Opting out of the program is also an option. Inform your mentor or email transition@ucl.ac.uk if you decide to do so.
Becoming a Transition Mentor
At the end of the program, you will receive information on how to become a Transition Mentor in your second year. Applications open in the Spring Term, and you are encouraged to apply if interested.
