Meet Llŷr, your Technologies & the Physical World presenter!
Since our first call with PhD Chemical Engineering student, Llŷr, we have been looking forward to seeing what all he comes up with for his Technology & the Physical World students! Its clear that Llŷr's research, and consequently the content of this UCL Expand programme, is relevant and important to real-life questions and problems, which we know will make it all the more interesting to you. We can't wait to hear how you get on!
Llŷr, where did you grow up?
I grew up in Porthmadog, North Wales.
Where did you do your undergraduate degree and what was it?
I completed my undergradaute at Cardiff University and my subject was Chemistry.
What is your current degree programme name, and what is your specific area of research, e.g. for your diss/thesis?
I'm currently completing a PhD in Chemical Engineering and my subject focus is on water characterisation and diagnostics of fuel cells, as well as developing recycling methods for materials.
I am looking forward to showcasing my research and having the opportunity to inspire young scientists and engineers.”““I spend most of my time analysing the images of actors, masks, and theatre performances which have survived from the Roman era.”
Llŷr, we know you love studying and researching, but what is your favourite thing about being a university student?
I love being able to work and collaborate alongside like-minded people while continuing to learn every day.
Do you know what you want to do when you finish your degree?
Strictly speaking, no. I have ideas about staying in research and academia, but I'm keeping an open mind as to where I will end up as things can change a lot over 3-4 years.
What are you most excited about with UCL Expand? How do you think the students will benefit from the programme?
I am looking forward to showcasing my research and having the opportunity to inspire young scientists and engineers. I hope the students will be able to benefit from learning about relevant topics that goes into more detail and depth than their school curriculum.
Tell us a random fact about you…
I formed a rock band back when I was in school. We were lucky enough to win a local competition that gave us a slot to play at a festival in the area where we got to go backstage and meet acts like Beck and Tom Odell.
If you won the lottery, what would you buy/do first with it?
Not necessarily the first thing, but I would definitely buy a weekend ticket to an F1 event.
If you had a superpower, what would it be?
Flight. It would be much more convenient than getting the tube!
