Ringing Records
My ringing records have built up over the years. Putting them online and
writing simple scripts to analyse them has helped me learn new computer
techniques, making my job a lot easier!
Most of these records are just text files that I create from various lists.
I doubt they will look very pretty under WWW as they are not HTML aware.
They are also links to files that I update each month, so I shall have to
remember to update these links each month! Please contact me if you find
any files that are obviously more than two months out of date.
Quarter Peal Records
I do not keep my quarter peal records online on this machine. I update a
Microsoft Word file on my Macintosh every so often. This means I can only
have the summary of quarter peals rung available here.
- Summary of Quarter Peals
rung.
It is probably worth explaining the format of this file! The first column
is the quarter peal number, followed by the date, month and year. Next
comes the tower (with dedication if more than one tower in this location),
the number of changes rung, the method(s) rung, the bell which I rang (with
a c after if I called the quarter) and finally the time taken. Each field
was originally separated by a tab, but I have changed that to two spaces to
make it easier to read.
Tower Records
I have kept very accurate records for the towers that I have visited, and a
fairly accurate list of towers not visited! These are the two data files
that the analysis is run from. Note that both these files are wide and
are meant to be printed out on 132 column line printer paper, so do not
expect them to look pretty on the screen!
- List of towers I have been to.
The format of this file is the number of the tower, the date visited and
the details of the tower in a similar style of entry to the Doves guide.
- List of towers I have not been to.
This is just an alphabetical list of all the towers with 4 or more bells
that I have not yet been to.
- Number of times rung in each
tower.
I make a note of each time I ring in a tower, and this is added to the main
list once a month. The list is in reverse order with the most visited
towers listed at the bottom of the list. The list was only started in
September 1985, so a lot of my early ringing is not included.
Analysis of Tower Records
The lists of towers I have and have not visited is used by a Unix script to
analyse where I have and have not rung. Various files are produced in the same
format as the initial data file, but sorted or grouped in different ways.
The files available are as follows:
Towers rung in:
- List of Counties with number of towers rung in each county.
- List of Features of the towers rung in.
- List of Landmark towers rung in (every hundredth tower).
- List of First Letters of towers rung in.
- List of number of Bells in the towers rung in.
- List of number of towers rung in in each Year.
Towers not rung in:
- List of Counties with number of towers not rung in each county.
- List of First Letters of towers not rung in.
- List of number of Bells in the towers not rung in.
There are other lists that I can forward on request, such as a complete
list of the towers rung in listed by county etc etc. Please contact me if
you would like to see any of the further lists. If there is enough
response, I shall add them to the list above.
Ringing Worlds
For my own benefit, I have a list online of all the Ringing Worlds that I
have at home. I have a complete set from 1967 up until the present issue.
Please contact me if you need anything looking up in that year range.
