Notes here are
intended to reinforce, not replace, the content of lectures
As I have now retired from UCL and no longer have space on the group web server most of these files are not available on-line. I can supply copies by e-mail.
If you would rather have copies of the notes to print
out, you may find the PDF or PostScript versions more useful. You should be
able to print them at ISD clusters. Please note that some Internet browsers are
not very good at representing subscripts and superscripts in these documents:
in dubious cases, the PDF or PostScript version should be relied upon.
The PDF and PostScript versions are accessed by opening
the browsable versions and clicking on a link on the first page. You can view
these on screen if your Internet browser is set up to associate
- a file of type
.PS with a suitable viewer such as GhostScript
- a file of type
.PDF with Adobe Acrobat
(see under
Available Software on ISD cluster machines).
Alternatively, you could save the .PS files in your own
filespace and use a DOS window to PRINT them directly to a PostScript printer
(the printers on ISD clusters are suitable).
In these notes you
will find references to further reading, by reference to pages in standard
texts. The abbreviations used are:
- SB for
Physics for Scientists and Engineers, by Serway and Beichner,
Saunders
- FGT for
Physics for Scientists and Engineers, by Fishbane, Gasiorowicz and
Thornton, Prentice-Hall
- AF for
Physics, by Alonso and Finn, Prentice-Hall
- PIV ot PV for
Physics of Vibrations and Waves, 4th or 5th edition, by H.J. Pain,
Prentice-Hall
- H for Optics
(2nd edition) by E. Hecht Addison-Wesley (1974)
