2. Describe the role of maternal gene products in mesoderm formation in Xenopus

 

3. Describe pre-implantation mouse development. Then write notes on TWO of the following:

a) generating transgenic mice by egg injection

b) knocking out genes in embryonic stem (ES) cells

c) deriving embryonic stem (ES) cells from mouse embryos

 

4. Write an essay on signalling pathways involved in ageing

 

5. Compare eye development in vertebrates and Drosophila.

 

6. Describe what is known about the genes that determine sex in mammals. How does the mammalian sex determination pathway compare with that of invertebrates?

 

7. Discuss how vertebrate limbs are specified and patterned

 

8. Write an essay on how anterior-posterior and dorso-ventral patterning events contribute to the different regions and cell types found in the mammalian central nervous system.

 

9. Describe three different experimental methods that can be used to

investigate processes during embryonic development (such as vascular

development, axon guidance etc.) and discuss the advantages and limitations of

each approach.
