We developed a methodology for evaluating problems caused by different barriers. This was developed and tested with the assistance of a group of people with a wide variety of accessibility problems. The methodology involves testing the extent to which an element of the public transport system is a barrier to people. Using the number of people for whom a barrier exists as the means of evaluation, it is possible to compare the effects of different barriers. This would allow comparison of the effects anticipated from different proposed schemes which aim to enhance accessibility. The methodology was tested in a pilot exercise with a small number of participants. Results were very encouraging and a more extensive testing phase is being developed.
