Community Transport and Community Development in Rural Areas
Abstract
This paper discusses the ways in which the community could be involved in the provision of rural transport. The problems associated with rural communities are briefly discussed in the context of transport problems. Some examples of community-based solutions are given and the concept of formalised community involvement is raised using an example from Cumbria. The paper argues that communities need to be aware of their needs, to know the impacts of the whole range of potential solutions and to keep an open mind about how their problems might be solved. The Community Transport Association has a very important role to play in this task.
