Instructions for visiting staff and PhD students

The Department of Chemical Engineering at UCL is keen to host visiting staff and PhD students from other universities.

We are not able to accept all visitors who make an application to visit the Department; however, we are keen to welcome visitors where possible. To facilitate your application and ensure we can manage our resources effectively, please follow the appropriate instructions as per the below.

PhD students

Instructions for PhD students who would like to visit UCL for a short period of research (one term or less)

For PhD students from other universities who would like to visit UCL to undertake a short period of research (i.e. less than 3 months), please provide the following details to the Department by way of application:

  1. Proposed dates of visit.
  2. Reason for visit.
  3. Department academic who would supervise during period of visiting research and details of any prior contact with this academic.
  4. Whether any funding is required.
  5. Letter of recommendation from their main advisor and a CV.

The above should be submitted to the EA to Head of Department, via email chemeng.ea@ucl.ac.uk.

Applicants will be notified shortly after submission if they have been accepted to visit the Department of Chemical Engineering as a visiting research student. 

Instructions for PhD students who would like to visit UCL for an extended period of research 

PhD students who want to stay for more than 3 months, are expected to pay a fee equivalent to the home research fees pro-rata.

Visiting PhD’s should provide the following details to the Department by way of application:

  1. Proposed dates of visit.
  2. Reason for visit.
  3. Department academic who would supervise during period of visiting research and details of any prior contact with this academic.
  4. Letter of recommendation from their main advisor and a CV.
  5. Status: Overseas or EU/home?

The above should be submitted to the EA to Head of Department, via email chemeng.ea@ucl.ac.uk.

Applicants will be notified shortly after submission if you have been accepted to visit the Department of Chemical Engineering. If successful, you will directed to our online shop where you can make payment for your visit. 

If you have overseas status, the process will begin to obtain a visa which will be organised by yourself, with the help of the Postgraduate Research Administrator (if Tier 5) chemeng-phdenquiries@ucl.ac.uk. More information on what is needed can be found here:


NOTE: If you have overseas status you will not be expected to pay until after your visa has been granted.

Post-Doctoral Researchers (PDRAs)

Instructions for PDRA’s who would like to visit UCL for minimum of 1 month and up to a maximum of 12 months

PDRA’s who want to stay for more than 1 month, are expected to pay a fee equivalent to the home research fees pro-rata. Visiting PDRA’s should provide the following details to the Department by way of application:

  1. Proposed dates of visit.
  2. Reason for visit.
  3. Department academic who would supervise during period of visiting research and details of any prior contact with this academic.
  4. Letter of recommendation from their main advisor and a CV.
  5. Status: Overseas or EU/home?

The above should be submitted to the EA to Head of Department, via email chemeng.ea@ucl.ac.uk.

Applicants will be notified shortly after submission if you have been accepted to visit the Department of Chemical Engineering. If successful, you will directed to our online shop where you can make payment for your visit. 

If you have overseas status, the process will begin to obtain a visa which will be organised by yourself, with the help of the Finance and Staffing Administrator (if tier 5) chemeng.hr@ucl.ac.uk. More information on what is needed can be found here:


Payment is required after the successful granting of a visa.

NOTE: If you have overseas status you will not be expected to pay until after your visa has been granted.

Affiliate Academics

Instructions for affiliate academics who would like to visit UCL for minimum of 1 month and up to a maximum of 12 months

Affiliate academics who want to stay for more than 1 month, are expected to pay a fee equivalent to the home research fees. This is pro-rata for the second month onwards.
