The research examines how changes of the past decades contributed to the reproduction of marginality among the urban poor in Romania. Since two important arenas of change in the past century have been employment markets and property relations, the dissertation will focus on what kind of relationships families developed with these two fields and how their individual strategies contributed to the reproduction or overcoming of poverty. In addition, the role of extended family and community networks in the reproduction or overcoming of poverty will also be analyzed. At a more general level the thesis will address questions about urban development in socialism and post-socialism; property relations in socialism and post-socialism; industrialization in socialism, and the reorganization and repossession of industrial spaces after the collapse of the totalitarian system.
