Examination: 85%. You will sit
the exam in the third term. The exam will last for two and a half hours,
and the paper will consist of two sections. Section A consists of six short
questions. Section
B consists of longer questions; you will have to answer three out of five. You can see examples of the types of examination question here.

The three best homework problem sets plus the essay: 15%.
You will hand these in to one of the lecturers; the problem sheets are
marked by postgraduate markers under the supervision of the lecturers,
while the essay is marked by the Communication Skills Team. In both cases your tutor
will return the marked work to you and give you a chance to discuss it.
The departmental guidelines on late submission of written
work apply: for each day late, the mark awarded will be reduced by 10%
of the original mark. For work handed in more than 10 days late, no mark
will be awarded. These penalties will only be waived if you can show
that the work was late for a good reason that was outside your control
- for example, a bona fide illness supported by a doctor's note.
