When to pay your tuition fees

Autumn starters must pay at least one third of your fee amount before 31 October, or you may be prevented from enrolling or accessing academic services.

This guidance explains when you need to pay your fees if you are self-funded and the consequences of non-payment.

If you are a modular student enrolling in the autumn term you should pay the first instalment when the fees for your module selection appear on your Portico account. The remaining two instalments should be paid by the deadlines indicated above.

Instalment deadlines for self-funded students enrolling in March/April

If you are self-funding all or part of your studies, you must ensure that you pay your full fees for the year before or at enrolment. There are no instalments available for students enrolling in March/April.

Late and Non-Payment of Fees

Self-funding students are required to pay their fees promptly (in line with payment deadlines on Portico) and are not expected to enrol without funding in place to finance their studies. In exceptional circumstances, students unable to meet a fee payment deadline or with any concerns regarding their fees must contact the Fees office at the earliest opportunity.

Sponsored students are ultimately liable for payment of their fees and must ensure their sponsors pay promptly. Debt flags will be applied to the accounts of students with overdue fees and academic sanctions may be applied.

Students failing to pay on time will be given a debtor status (debt flag) on Portico that may result in academic sanctions including the loss of services.  Continued non-payment of an undisputed debt (with no agreed repayment arrangements in place) may result, at UCL’s discretion, in the passing of the debt to an external agency.

Time limited enrolment

If you are enrolling at the beginning of the academic year in autumn and do not pay your first instalment, or provide evidence of sponsorship before or during enrolment, you will be given ‘Time Limited Enrolment’ (TLE) status. This expires on 31st October each year and it is essential that you pay one third of your fee liability, or provide evidence of sponsorship, by this date. Once either of these criteria have been met, your status will be updated to ‘Enrolled’. Failure to meet these criteria by this date will result in application of a debt flag on your account and loss of services/facilities (known as Academic Sanctions).

Students enrolling in the new calendar year (i.e. January to April) will not be entitled to TLE and will be expected to pay at least 50% of their fee liability (charged from your start date until the end of the academic year) or provide proof of sponsorship to be fully enrolled. The second instalment is due by 2nd May. Any students enrolling in May or later in the academic year are expected to pay 100% of the fee due or provide proof of sponsorship for this period. You will not be entitled to TLE.

All information relating to the cost of your programme can be found on the published Fee Schedules or your Portico account.
