Meet your researcher in Linguistics

Principal theme: Integration of research and education

In their first week at UCL, Linguistics undergraduates meet researchers in a programme designed to introduce them to the breadth of research in Linguistics.

91% of students in our most recent poll said that they found the programme interesting, and the comments fed back to us have been positive.

The students are divided into groups and assigned mentors who explain the process, support the groupwork and discuss questions to ask the researchers. A day is then set aside in registration for the groups to see their researcher for a 30-minute interview.

After a follow-up meeting with their mentor, where they receive support with their presentation skills, the groups upload a draft presentation to Moodle, for feedback from the researcher. In mid-October, the groups deliver their presentations to the whole cohort in an informal meeting, over pizza.

" I think working in a group immediately put me into contact with some people I might not have approached on my own. This was helpful in adjusting, as there were people I knew from the very first days. Speaking in front of the entire class was also a good experience, especially for someone like me who does not like presenting and is quite shy.” UCL Linguistics undergraduate

Another commented: “Being able to meet and talk to a researcher who can provide some insight and advice on possible steps after graduating was very inspiring and interesting.”
