Phase 3
In the third phase of the project we will evaluate the GetREAL staff training programme in a cluster randomised controlled trial with a sample of services surveyed in Phase 1 (around 35 services), to determine if it improves service user activity. Half these services will be randomly assigned to receive the GetREAL intevention which will be delivered by one of two GetREAL teams comprising an occupational therapist, an activity worker and a service user. Each team will spend five weeks with 8-9 services. The main outcome we will assess is the proportion of time that service users spend doing activities compared with those in the comparison services who receive standard care. This data will be collected from interviews with staff and service users. This will allow us to evaluate the clinical and cost effectiveness of the GetREAL training programme.
