4 Tips to make your room start to feel like a home

25 September 2020

You’re about to start your first year here at UCL and are probably keen to get settled into your new space as quickly as possible. To help you feel secure in your halls, we’re here with some top tips to make your room feel like home!

Resident decorated and settled into their room

When moving into a new place, it is important that you feel comfortable and relaxed. It might seem like a blank canvas at the moment but there are plenty of things you can do to make your new room your own.

  1. Don’t forget your bedding!

Using stylish bedding is a really simple way to brighten up your room and add your own personal touch to the space. Without needing to spend too much money, introducing colours and patterns through your bed is a great start to making your room feel like home.

You can buy a selection of striped and coloured bedroom kits from UniKitOut, which will be ready for you at your halls when you move in. They even offer a range of blankets and cushions to help add some extra cosiness - we all know how important sleep is!

To see more of what’s on offer, head to Oxford St. With a vast range of high-street shops with their own home departments, you’ll have many patterns and colours to choose from. A 20 minute walk or a 6 minute tube journey from the main campus, it’s super easy to get to. Just don’t forget your face covering!

  1. Make the most of your pin board

Make the most of your pin board by displaying some photos of friends and family. Bringing your favourite memories into your room will make your place seem immediately familiar and can help you settle in faster. There are a range of free photo apps which can be used to order high-quality printed photos straight to your halls within days.

When you move in, you’ll also be given a wall calendar to display in your room. This will let you know any important days to note throughout the year, such as term starts and holidays, but can also be used to write in any events or key dates you don’t want to forget. Pin this onto your board to help you organise your time so you won’t forget any deadlines during your studies.

  1. Mood lighting

Mood lighting can be really effective in helping you wind down in the evenings after a long day at university. Candles are not permitted in our halls, but there are many alternatives which work just as well to help you relax!

Battery-operated fairy lights are very popular as they can add a hint of warm colour to your room whilst also acting as a general decoration throughout the day. They come in different shapes and sizes and are offered by many shops with a home range. Place them around your bed, desk or pin board to avoid leaving any marks.

  1. Organise your belongings

Having a messy, unorganised room could make settling in a little bit more difficult. To help, there are organisers and storage solutions you can buy to make the most of your empty space.

Storage boxes are a great way to create more room for clothes, shoes, or other items. These are available in different sizes and patterns from many furniture shops. Depending on your halls, these can fit on your shelves, on top of your wardrobe, or underneath your bed.

Your room is going to be your home for the next year, so make it your own! Take these 4 tips as a starting block to add your own personal touches, stay on top of your organisation and create a calming and organised environment. Don’t forget to check in your General Regulations for any particular rules or prohibited items, but make it your own - each student is different and that’s what makes UCL Accommodation great!
