The UCL Institute of the Americas is seeking to appoint a leading scholar with an excellent research record, an ability to provide intellectual leadership and a commitment to high-quality teaching.
Duties and Responsibilities
The UCL Institute of the Americas is a leading multidisciplinary specialist institution for the study of Latin America, the United States, the Caribbean and Canada. In the UK it acts as a focal point for students and researchers seeking to develop in-depth regional and continental knowledge of the Americas. Our academic staff specialize in History, Political Science, Sociology, Political Economy, International Relations, Development and Anthropology. The department has research expertise across the whole hemisphere, with specialists working on Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, the United States, Venezuela, the Caribbean, and Central America, especially Guatemala.
The successful candidate will have an established portfolio of high-quality published work and show evidence of an ability to conduct research of international quality in the future and a successful track record of research income, with exciting and compelling plans for future grant applications. We are keen to appoint someone with the capacity to contribute an impact case study to a future Research Excellence Framework exercise.
As well as undertaking his/her/their own research, the appointee should make a significant contribution to the research and teaching culture of the Department. The successful appointee will be expected to contribute the full range of teaching, impact, and enabling within the Department commensurate with their role. There is an expectation that the appointee would be a candidate for Head of Department within a few years of taking up the post.

We welcome applications from candidates with research and teaching interests in all fields that complement and strengthen our existing research and teaching capacity. We are seeking to expand our teaching programmes in international relations of the Americas, foreign policy, international development, and the history of the western hemisphere.
We particularly welcome applications from candidates whose research and teaching interests span the Americas. Candidates with a single-country specialism will also receive every consideration.
