New series of 'Britain at Low Tide' explores coastal and intertidal archaeology

The six episode series, being broadcast on Channel 4, features the work undertaken by the CITiZAN team and other professional and community-led groups to record our coastal and intertidal archaeology and the amazing stories which are revealed along the way. Each episode focuses on a geographical region, discovering its rich archaeology, including remains from all ages - prehistoric monuments, medieval ruins and World War Two shipwrecks.

This second series of Britain at Low Tide continues to have strong UCL connections. The presenter, Tori Herridge and the featured archaeologists, Oliver Hutchinson and Charlotte Mecklenburg are all UCL alumni while Gustav Milne, the CITiZAN Project Leader, is currently Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Archaeology.

CITiZAN delivers community-based training to create an infrastructure and network of volunteers with the skills and systems to be able to record, monitor and celebrate the highly significant, but fragile and threatened intertidal archaeological sites across England. The project developed directly from the Thames Discovery Programme, which was based at UCL from 2008-2010, and has maintained strong links with UCL ever since, working closely with the Institute of Archaeology.

According to Gustav:

• "The vulnerable archaeological remains on our foreshores offer glimpses of the past before they're washed away revealing new stories about the people, places and events of this island nation. Working with our dedicated community teams, Citizen Science is helping to record these significant sites and it's great to be able to showcase them in the Britain at Low Tide series."
