State Control of Production, Distribution and Consumption of Inka-Style Pottery in the Southern Border of Tawantinsuyu (Inka State).
This study aims to identify the nature and extent of state control over the production, distribution, and consumption of Inka-style ceramics in the Aconcagua Valley and the Maipo - Mapocho basin, near the southern frontier of the empire. From macroscopic analysis techniques, such as the identification of manufacturing traces, as well as compositional analysis (thin section petrography, pXRF, SEM-EDS, LA-ICP-MS, XRD and Raman spectrometry) in ceramic fragments of certain state vessels and a sample of local ceramics, the project will detect and interpret the causes of possible changes in the patterns of Chaîne Opèratoire, paste and pigment recipes and possible raw material origin. Identifying transformations in the organisation of local pottery production in both areas studied (whether due to Inka influence, the presence of foreign specialists or local innovation), will inform a re-evaluation of distinct proposals about how the Incas annexed this territory, contributing to wider discussions regarding the processes of Inkanisation and the expansionist logic of Tawantinsuyu.
