PhD supervisor: Dr Hélia Marçal
Working title for PhD: Towards New Materialities: Time-based Media Art in Chinese Socialist Realism from 1976 to 2019

I am a PhD student in the Department of History of Art at University College London, researching the evolution and materiality of Chinese socialist realism in the period between 1976-2019.

My project addresses gaps in scholarship by focusing on how time-based media—film, digital, and performance art—have expanded the genre’s conventional boundaries, linking it to broader political, cultural, and technological contexts. Using frameworks from post-Marxist theory and feminist new materialism, my project explores how Chinese socialist realism artists have reconfigured categories like class, gender, and national identity. This perspective allows me to view Chinese socialist realism as a dynamic and evolving art form, rather than a static ideological tool.

I hold an MA in History of Art from the Courtauld Institute of Art, with a focus on Chinese contemporary art, and a BA from University College London. My project is funded by the Critical Histories of Art studentship.
