Facts from Czech History
1704: This year saw the publication in London of the first comprehensive botanical study of the island of Lucon in
the Philippines. The author was a Jesuit missionary and pharmacist, Jiří Josef Kamel (1661-1706) of Brno, known in Latin, the language
of scholarship at the time, as Camellus, and in English as Camel or Camelli. He was in regular contact with contemporary botanists at Kew; the
Swedish botanist Carl von Linné
named the camellia after him.
