The Valedictory Lecture closes the summer term of the Architecture Part 3 (ARB/RIBA) programme and is a platform celebrating outstanding voices in the field and their approach to architectural practice, and an invitation to broaden the discussion about future fronts of action for the profession. Previous guests include Leslie Lokko and Sofie Pelsmakers.

This year’s lecture will be delivered by Liza Fior, founding partner of muf architecture/art. muf is an internationally recognised practice whose work is a collaboration between art and architecture – simultaneously pragmatic and endlessly ambitious. Projects range from urban design schemes to small-scale temporary interventions via landscapes and buildings – a continual dialogue between details and strategy. In the lecture, Liza will expand on her experience as an architect working at the intersection of art and public space, reflecting on the distinct roles architects can and should take to negotiate their agency.

Speaker biography

Liza Fior is a founding partner of muf architecture/art, whose work navigates the intersection between the built and social fabric, and between public and private spaces. muf authored Villa Frankenstein, the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2010, using Ruskin and Venice to explore how detail can inform strategy. The practice has received numerous accolades, including the 2008 European Prize for Public Space – the first for the UK – for a new ‘town square’ in Barking, East London. Liza is also a co-author of This is What We Do: A muf Manual.

Liza teaches at Central St Martins on the Architecture: Cities and Innovation MA. Previously Liza was a visiting professor at Yale, with a studio exploring the alternative legacy for London's Olympic site, building on her role as an LDA design advisor.
