BSSC Green Onions wins Gold Award of sustainability for the sixth year running

The BSSC Green Onions team have won the Gold Award of Sustainability for Green Impact for the sixth year running. They received this award at the 2023 UCL Sustainability Awards Ceremony.  

Since the launch of UCL’s first Environmental Sustainability Strategy in 2013, UCL has become a leader on sustainability in the HE sector, receiving numerous awards for its ambitious sustainability programme. Green Impact is a UCL-wide environmental competition and accreditation scheme that allows departments and divisions across the university to improve their environmental impact, support UCL's Sustainability Strategy and engage peers and colleagues with these essential issues. UCL’s Green Impact programme has gone from strength to strength, involving staff at UCL in making their work environments greener. 

Green Onions is an initiative from the Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction. The team aims to create a channel for colleagues and students to communicate sustainable ideas, research, photos, news, and engage in sustainability activities. The team channel is divided into three sections: 

• Green Shop: This section focuses on sharing links to sustainable and eco-friendly products, as well as providing tips on how to reduce, reuse, and recycle. 
• Green Impact Projects: This section covers specific tasks related to Green Impact Projects, which are then submitted as part of the BSSC Green Impact workbook. 
• Biophilic Research: In this section, the team posts research, news stories, and work based on Biophilic Principles. 

BSSC Director Professor Priti Parikh who was also in attendance at the event, represented the department as the keynote speaker, and awarded all the special category winners.  

Taslima Ferdous, School Administrator and Green Impact Lead said: "A big thank you to the BSSC Green Onions team for achieving Gold award at yesterday's Sustainability Awards Ceremony. I would like to give a special thanks to our student ambassadors Wijaya, Dinta and Gong, Yiyao who went above and beyond with our sustainability projects and initiatives, enabling us to retain our gold award for the 6th year running. And thank you to everyone at BSSC for supporting our green initiatives to be more sustainable within the department.”
