DPU Photography Competition 2024 winners

24 July 2024

We are pleased to announce the winners and runners-up of this year's DPU Photography Competition.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this year's DPU Photography Competition. This event encourages our students to encapsulate key DPU themes through their photographs, offering an opportunity to share their Overseas Practice Engagement experiences with our community.

Winner

Wei Wu, Health in Urban Development MSc.

Two boys chase a cat between tents in Morocco

In first place for this year's DPU photography competition is Wei Wu from the Health in Urban Development MSc. This photo was taken in Marrakech, Morocco. In the temporary camp after the earthquake, two little boys are playing soccer and chasing a cat. It is a fantastic visual storytelling with very strong compositional elements such as usage of leading lines and captures a feeling of movement and synergy between the two boys and the cat. The photo also demonstrates a very good awareness of colour theory, with a clear palette and tone to the image.

Runner-up

José Cepero, Building and Urban Design in Development MSc.

Inside Ocupação 9 de Julho a woman is cooking

In second place for the DPU photography competition is José Cepero from the Building and Urban Design in Development MSc. Taken in São Paulo. This photo shows us inside Ocupação 9 de Julho, ‘Quem ocupa cuida’ (Who occupies takes care.) This is the most important motto for Movimento Sem Teto do Centro (MSTC). Caring is a crucial aspect of the insurgent citizenship practices MSTC members exercise to re-think societal roles. By cooking, women and men from the communal kitchen provide food for others and enable the possibility to live better. Kitchens are the very first space to be implemented after a building is occupied, therefore, they allow people to occupy and care for occupiers.

Congratulations to all our students who took part!
