The Sustainable Energy Regulation Network (SERN) project update
10 July 2012
The Sustainable Energy Regulation Network (SERN), an initiative funded by the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP) since 2004, is specialised in knowledge transfer between regulators and government officials of developing countries on policy and regulatory mechanisms that promote and accelerate the development of sustainable energy.
SERN coordinates an annual policy and regulatory review which gives an overview of sustainable energy initiatives in more than 160 developing and emerging countries. This review conducted with a team of research assistants is being completely updated in 2012 and can be found on the REEGLE website - the clean energy portal of REEEP which attracts over than 300,000 requests per month.
SERN organises also regularly events and gives presentations on clean energy mechanisms. Recent events include a seminar on feed-in tariff mechanisms at the World Forum of Energy Regulators in Quebec, May 2012, attended by UCL-Energy researchers Gill Owen and Xavier Lemaire, and a workshop in partnership with the Asian Development Bank on energy access with renewable energies in Manila, June 2012. SERN produces a newsletter disseminated to more than 1,200 regulators, academics, researchers and consultants in developing countries and also literature reviews of reports, papers, websites on clean energy.
SERN conducts field works in developing countries to produce case studies on renewable energy policies and programmes supporting different small-scale technologies like for instance off-grid rural electrification with solar systems or solar water heaters.
