The influence of past climatic experiences on human adaptation to new conditions

Funded by the Turkish Ministry of National Education.

In recent years, it has seen a growing trend towards traveling and migration from countries to countries because of economic, social, political, educational and environmental reasons etc. People, who have different cultural and genetic backgrounds, move from different countries to the same place but they may feel different from each other physically and psychologically because of various climatic experiences. Consequently, somebody moving to a new city may have some possible adaptation problems and these problems can be crucial for especially students who need to adapt to new conditions quickly to benefit from education services more effectively.

The main aim of this study is to explore the effective variables on human adaptability to new climates and find out some ways to speed up the adaptation period to maintain overall human health and wellbeing. In order to identify effective factors on adaptability, the research has been done in London which has considerable potential with a large number of international students from many countries, cultures and ethnicities.

For this purpose, participants are asked to give some information related to their sleeping pattern, thermal and lighting feelings and some changes in their life after they move. This information is evaluated through SAD (Seasonal affective disorder) level of the participants as an indicator of adaptability on the basis of individual differences such as lifestyles, cultures and personal characteristics. This research aims to understand the concept of adaptability and help the architects to design the buildings which can meet several people’s needs.
