Established in 1894, ASHRAE is an international organisation dedicated to promoting human wellbeing through sustainable technology in the built environment. The society and its members focus on building systems, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, refrigeration, and sustainability in the industry. By conducting research, developing standards, publishing findings, and providing ongoing education, ASHRAE contributes to shaping the future of the built environment. ASHRAE UK is one of the chapters in the European region that connects practitioners and academics passionate about serving the built environment, creating value, and recognizing the accomplishments of others.

Mentored by Dr Valentina Marincioni and Dr Shen Wei, the ASHRAE UCL Student Chapter is a vibrant group of postgraduates at the Bartlett, with Cheng Cui serving as the president. The student branch encourages the professional growth of student members through continuous professional development, networking, and knowledge exchange. In the ASHRAE UK Chapter, Dr Shen Wei and Alex Fung were appointed as the Chair of Student Activities and the Chair of Young Engineers in ASHRAE (YEA), respectively, which exemplifies their commitment, leadership, and volunteerism to promote building services engineering to youth in the region.

In May 2024, the ASHRAE UK Building Services Exhibition and Technology Awards ceremony brought together practitioners and academics in the building services industry, not only to celebrate the remarkable work and projects in the region but also to provide valuable opportunities for professionals, researchers, and students to collaborate and tackle urgent challenges together; advancing the arts and sciences of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, and their allied fields. In attendance of the awards ceremony from The Bartlett, UCL's Faculty of the Built Environment, were Programme Leader of the Smart Buildings and Digital Engineering MSc, Dr Valentina Marincioni, doctoral researcher at the UCL Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering, Alex Fung, and Dr Shen Wei from The Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction.

At the awards ceremony, Soumya Uttam, a current student of the Smart Buildings and Digital Engineering MSc, was presented with the ASHRAE UK Student Scholarship for outstanding academic achievement.

I am thrilled to have been awarded the ASHRAE student scholarship and to attend ASHRAE's exciting events for students at UCL. I hope to use this scholarship to deepen my understanding of building services and designing high-performance buildings, empowering me to make a positive impact in the future! - Soumya Uttam

We also congratulate Alex Fung who won first place in the PhD Poster Competition, which presented his ongoing doctoral research.

Receiving the poster award is a profound honor in my PhD journey. I'm deeply grateful to my advisors, peers, and family for their unwavering support. Creating the poster was a chance to visually narrate my work, highlighting the discoveries and innovations that define my project. This award motivates me to push the boundaries further and strive for excellence in the built environment field. It’s a proud moment and a reminder of the power of persistence and collaboration.” - Alex Fung
