Public banks and patient finance

IIPP’s work on patient finance looks at how public banks are opening up new technological frontiers and economic opportunities around the world.

In countries like Germany and China, active mission-oriented public funding is increasingly coming from state investment banks. By placing public banks at the centre of the investment process, these countries have taken centre stage in confronting the key social and environmental challenges of the 21st century. By steering the path of innovation towards overcoming key challenges, these banks are not just correcting market failures; they are actively creating and shaping markets.

IIPP’s work on patient finance looks at how public banks are opening up new technological frontiers and economic opportunities around the world; how different design features of public banks affect their ability to provide long-term, patient finance; and where the opportunities lie for new forms of public finance to promote long-term investment and mission-orientated policy around the world.
