UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP) Policy Report: IIPP 2020-14

The Mission Italia Report (with its Italian corresponding version "Missioni Italia") is a policy document written by Professor Mariana Mazzucato in her role as Economic Advisor to the Prime Minister of Italy. The report proposes a mission-oriented approach to policy-making for the Country.

It first outlines the principles of mission-oriented policymaking and why it requires a different analytical lens on the economy. It then proposes three examples of where this approach could be applied in Italy. These areas are the digital transformation, the green transition at the city level and the health system. Lastly, it focuses on complementary cross-cutting issues, such as the existence of different systems of innovations, the relationship between public and private actors, the strategic role of public procurement, the opportunities provided by a dynamic public administration and the role of state-owned companies in a country like Italy.
