What is COP29?

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP) is the annual climate change summit hosted by the UN. COP29 is the 29th meeting of this kind.

COP29 is an important milestone for climate finance, as this is the year the New Collective Quantified Goal on Climate Finance is due to be agreed, this will be the successor to the last funding pledge made in 2009. Alongside this, there will be key negotiations on a variety of critical climate challenges.

How is UCL contributing?

Research provides vital understanding of the challenges and opportunities of addressing the climate crisis. Organisations like UCL can provide scientific evidence that can help shape policy recommendations and ensure a positive future for the planet.

Each year colleagues from UCL participate in COP, both physically at the conference and in the past two years virtually, now that the UNFCCC offer a virtual attendance route.

UCL Grand Challenge of Climate Crisis

The UCL Grand Challenge of Climate Crisis supports inter-disciplinary responses to the issues raised by climate change, from biodiversity loss to climate-driven migration, ecology, water and air quality, sustainability, and, particularly relevant to this years' COP; financing responses to the climate crisis.

The Grand Challenge of Climate Crisis is a key part of the UCL 2022-2027 Strategic Plan, which sets out how UCL will harness its academic strengths to develop solutions to global problems.

With two academic leads (Pro-Vice-Provosts Professor Mark Maslin and Professor Lisa Vanhala) and a supporting team from UCL Grand Challenges, this theme has already launched two funding calls this year and is bringing the UCL community together through knowledge exchange activity and networks.
