ricki madawho

What is you job role and how long have you worked at UCL?

I’m Ricki, Teaching & Learning administrator for the MSc Computational Finance, MSc Financial Risk Management and Software Systems Engineering programmes in the department of Computer Science.

I’ve been at UCL since 2019 (time really flies).

What do you do in your role?

I handle day-to-day administration for managing the student life cycle from admissions, through exam and assessment, right through to awards and graduation.

What’s the best thing about working in the Computer Science department?

Everyone is so positive and helpful. There is a genuine camaraderie and sharing of knowledge and skills here which I really like.

Also, computer science is a field I  personally love, so I have a real passion and engagement. I also love being empowered to present different ideas and solutions.

What things do you wish you’d known before starting your career?

Just, growing wiser, more mature and more considered and balanced with opinion. I’ve learned that challenges present opportunities to learn and grow.

What advice do you have for people who want to do what you do?

That work CAN be enjoyable and truly rewarding.

What’s the best thing about your job?

It helps to be passionate about the student life cycle and putting yourself in the eyes of the student. Being empathetic, neutral, reasonable and keeping an open mind also helps.

What does equity mean to you?

Equity is when resources are shared based on what each person needs in order to adequately level the playing field, whereas equality essentially means providing everyone with the same amount of resources regardless of whether everyone needs them

What is the best advice you have ever been given?

When faced with overwhelming tasks, break it down piece by piece. Also, when something works, scale it up

Who inspires you and why?

Tim-Berners Lee, Arthur C Clark, Einstein, Thurgood Marshall, Stephen Hawking,  Nelson Mandela, Dr Gavin Wood… and ‘Satoshi Nakamoto’ because they don’t accept the world as it is, but see the world as it could be.

What professional achievement are you most proud of and why?

Every student I help to complete their studies and graduate, I see as an achievement. It really pleases me when their final grades come together you see all their hard work pay off.

Where would you like to be in 5 years?

I'd like to become active in a leadership role, or an authoritative position in a specific area, tech, digital education, Moodle, or SITS/Portico; implementing change and improvement.
