The School for the Creative and Cultural Industries is delighted to launch the SCCI Cinema Club! Taking place at the One Pool Street Cinema at UCL East, we will be hosting a regular series of free screenings, sharing the films that have inspired and influenced researchers, artists, and practitioners across our creative community.

This month, Anna Maguire, public historian and Co-Lead of the UCL MA in Public History, has selected Ben Sharrock’s ‘Limbo’.

Anna says:

“I’m currently researching ‘sanctuary’ for refugees, asylum seekers and other migrants in twentieth century Britain. Is a state of limbo the other to sanctuary?

Limbo makes real the bureaucratic violence of waiting and processing asylum and leave to remain requests, relocating it to a ‘purgatorial island.’  But it also leaves space for humour, connection and the absurdity of this experience”.

Join us for drinks and refreshments from 6pm before a free screening of ‘Limbo’ at 6.45pm, introduced by Anna Maguire. Bring your friends, family and colleagues – all are welcome!

Please note the age rating for this film is 12A.

About the film

Close-up of 4 characters from Limbo including main protagonist Omar

Limbo is a wry, funny and poignant observation of the refugee experience, set on a fictional remote Scottish island where a group of new arrivals await the results of their asylum claims. Among them is Omar (Amir El-Masry), a young Syrian musician struggling with the guilt, regret and grief that comes with leaving his former life behind.

This critically-acclaimed, deadpan comedy-drama from a bold, new voice in British film shines a light on the hearts and lives of those at the centre of a crisis that is mostly only experienced through the headlines.

Running time: 103 minutes
Age rating:12A (infrequent strong language, racism, references to sex and sexual violence)

Year: 2020
Writer/Director: Ben Sharrock
Producers: Irune Gurtubai, Angus Lamont
