Doctoral School Competitions

 

Research Images as Art / Art Images as Research Competition

Once a year, the Doctoral School runs a Research Images as Art / Art Images as Research competition/exhibition that is open to all UCL graduate students and academic staff, either science or arts based. Entrants are invited to submit images associated with their research which have aesthetic appeal. Competition entrants will be invited to attend the Researcher Showcase Day where their research image submission will be displayed to their peers, and they will also be invited to attend the awards ceremony that follows. Competition winners and runners up will receive a cash prize and certificate.

Doctoral School Research Poster Competition

The Doctoral School runs a research poster competition which offers graduate research students an opportunity to advertise and discuss the innovative research they are undertaking, thereby providing them with an opportunity to raise the profile of their research.

Shortlisted applicants will be asked to attend the Researcher Showcase Day where they will present their poster to the judging panel. The shortlist will also be invited to attend the awards ceremony that follows. Competition winners and runners up will receive a cash prize and certificate.

Doctoral School Blog/Vlog & Podcast Competition

This competition aims to recognise new forms of media that researchers have started using, especially to express their research ideas to the general public.  

Blog submissions can be research based or about something more personal or funny like a research ‘failure’.

Shortlisted entrants will be invited to attend the Researcher Showcase Day where their submission will be displayed to their peers. Shortlisted entrants will also be invited to attend the awards ceremony that follows where the competition winners and runners up will be announced and will receive a cash prize and certificate.

Doctoral School Data Visualisation Competition

This competition aims to showcase sets of data in a creative way so that viewers can easily understand and absorb the data which are visually pleasing to the eye.  

This is in response to the increasing use of data visualisation techniques to illuminate research findings. 

Shortlisted entrants will be invited to attend the Researcher Showcase Day where their submission will be displayed to their peers.  

Shortlisted entrants will also be invited to attend the awards ceremony that follows where the competition winners and runners up will be announced and will receive a cash prize and certificate.

UCL Three Minute Thesis

The UCL 3 Minute Thesis is organised by the UCL Students Union. Faculty heats take place from February to May and winners from Faculty heats take part in the UCL final, which coincides with the Researcher Showcase Day.
