UCL Doctoral School Researcher Showcase Day 2024

When: 9:30am - 12:30pm, 5 June 2024

Where: Haldane Room, Wilkins Building

The Researcher Showcase Day, hosted by the Doctoral School, aims to showcase UCL researchers – both the research they’ve created and the ways in which their research has impacted them and the outside world. The showcase will open at 9:30am for viewing and will include a multi-media exhibition of the shortlisted entries from the Doctoral School’s four competitions (Research Poster, Research Images as Art / Art Images as Research, Data Visualisation, Blogs/Vlogs & Podcasts). You will be able to vote for your favourite Research Poster and Research Images entries in our People’s Choice Awards and will also be able to participate in some brain-teasing activities, such as:

  • the ‘Thesis on a post-(it)’ and ‘Your PhD motivation’ mini competitions, which will take place in-person (in the North Cloisters) and online via the Doctoral School’s Instagram - there will be prizes!
  • contribute to our interactive art installation! We want to create a piece of art that captures the full breadth of UCL's doctoral researchers' research fields. Research areas will be categorised by colour and each contributor will have the opportunity to paint a square on a large canvas that represents their research area/s. The idea is to create a beautiful canvas of your research in colour. Students will be able to contribute from 9:30am to 12:30pm in-person. For those unable to contribute in-person, a Doc School Instagram post detailing the research areas and their corresponding colours will be live from 9:00am on 5 June – comment with the colours relevant to your research and we will paint them onto the canvas for you! (A link to the post will be emailed out at 9:00am on 5 June).

The Doctoral School Researcher Showcase will be running in conjunction with the 3-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, hosted by the Students’ Union. Both events will take place in the Haldane Room on 5th June 2024. See the schedule below for exact timings and locations for each event.

Accessibility

The Haldane Room is wheelchair accessible and Doctoral School staff will be there on the day to support you if you need assistance.

  • A full access guide for the Wilkins Building can be found at AccessAble.

For those that cannot make it to the Researcher Showcase Day in person, in addition to posting about the event throughout the day on the Doctoral School Instagram, we will be running our ‘Thesis on a post-(it)’ and ‘Your PhD motivation’ mini competitions on there too! UCL doctoral researchers will have the opportunity to comment a 1-line version of their thesis and what their motivation for doing a PhD is underneath dedicated Doctoral School Instagram posts that will be live the morning of the event. Remote and in-person entries to the two mini competitions will be judged together, so remote entrants are equally eligible to win prizes! There will also be links (posted to this page when they are live) to vote for your favourite Research Poster and Research Images as Art / Art Images as Research remotely.

For any questions relating to accessibility, or to discuss your accessibility requirements, please email docschool@ucl.ac.uk.
