Aims
This course aims to demonstrate and explain how economists use economic theory and applied methods to study cities and their development. We will study the incorporation of space into economic models and how these models are used to analyse cities. We will apply economic methodology to policy-relevant issues including housing, land-use, sprawl, transportation, segregation, crime and education.

Prerequisites
Assumed knowledge
Students coming into the course should have a good understanding of basic microeconomics (competitive equilibria, consumer and producer theories, basic game theory). Also they should have a good command of calculus---i.e., they should be able to take derivatives and integrals and calculate maxima of functions.
Teaching and assessment
- 20 hours of lectures with 5 practical sessions and 8 compulsory tutorial classes.
- Assessment is a 2-hour unseen written examination in Term 3.
- Affiliate students leaving in December will take a 2-hour written examination set up by the department in the last week of Term 1. Affiliate students leaving in June will take the 2-hour written examination in Term 3.
