- 18650 Cell
X-ray macro-CT results of a commercial 18650 cell (a) showing a 3D reconstruction of the whole cell and orthogonal slices in the XY and YZ planes before thermal runaway and (b) showing orthogonal slices in the XY and YZ planes after thermal runaway using ARC. Arrows depict areas of deformation within cell architecture.

- LFP Prismatic Cell
NIKON XTH 225 images of a prismatic cell - Volume rendering, XZ and YZ views.
- LG 21700 M50 Cells (thermal abuse)
Nikon XT 225 scan of two LG 21700 M50 cells after thermal abuse testing. In the cell on the left (green) the "jellyroll" (the cyclinder of wrapped up electrodes in the centre of the cell) has been ejected out of the casing by the rapid evolution and expansion of gas, leading to large voids. In the cell on the right (red) the jellyroll has remained within the cell.
- Magnetic Elastomer Membrane
ZEISS Xradia 620 Versa sensor characterisation of 3D Microstructure of Soft Magnetic Elastomer Membrane for Dr Zhi Li, UCL Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering https://nxct.ac.uk/events-resources/3d-microstructure-of-soft-magnetic-e...
- 25 F EDLC Supercapacitor
All of the following X-ray CT images were produced using the NIKON XTH 225.
The X-ray CT images below are of an overcharged 25 F supercapacitor, highlighting the structual effects caused by overcharging:
The X-ray CT images below are of a 25 F supercapacitor operating at extreme temperatures, visualising the structural damage resulting from overheating:
The Xray CT images below are of a 25 F Electrochemical Double Layer Supercapacitor, displaying the full cell volume along with two XY slices through the cell:
- LG 21700 M50 Cell (after cycling)
Nikon XT 225 scan of an as-received ('pristine') LG 21700n M50 cell. These cells are designed for high energy primarily for the automotive industry:
Nikon XT 225 scan of an LG 21700 M50 Cell after cycling. The cell appears largely similar to the as-received sample. However, the jellyroll has begun to buckle at the centre of the cell, leading to lower stability and safety:
