Why should you choose a UCL AI and machine learning degree?

  • University of the Year 2024. Awarded by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide, we’re also ranked 9th globally in the latest QS World University Rankings (2024)
  • Learn from world-leading AI experts. Our faculty includes Professor David Silver (the principal research scientist behind AlphaGo, the Google DeepMind AI that defeated Go world champion Lee Sae Dol in front of a global audience of 200 million people) and Professor John Shawe-Taylor, UNESCO Chair of Artificial Intelligence.
  • Industry partnerships and connections. UCL Engineering is proud to work in partnership with world leaders in technology and AI safety, including UNESCO, the United Nations, the NHS, Google, Google Deep Mind and CISCO. Many of our programmes involve working alongside practitioners and experts from our industry partners.
  • Real world research impact. Whether we’re designing haptic feedback systems for safer autonomous cars, or helping scale up the manufacturing of the COVID-19 vaccine, the impact of our research continues to be felt all over the planet.
  • Come and study in the AI growth capital of Europe. London is ranked as the world’s most student-friendly location, according to QS Best Cities Ranking 2025. It’s also home to more than 750 AI companies, including Google DeepMind.
  • Dedicated careers support. The UCL Careers Guidance team is there to support you throughout your degree and for three years afterwards, maximising your chances of finding a career or academic position suited to your postgraduate qualifications.

Discover how you can use AI to make the world a better place at UCL, one of the world’s pioneering AI research institutions.

AI is no longer restricted to computer science. Whether you practice civil, electronic and electrical, mechanical or biomedical engineering, tools like AI, machine learning and computational approaches now play an integral part in how we use science to solve problems.

As an artificial intelligence engineer, you could explore medical engineering to develop vital healthcare applications. You could explore AI-assisted surgery, or look for ways to manipulate large amounts of imaging data to relieve time pressures on clinicians and provide faster, more accurate diagnoses.

With postgraduate degrees available through UCL Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering, your expertise in data mining could lead you to explore disease prediction and personalised medicine, helping us prevent disease and improve treatment.

Alternatively, you could use geospatial sciences to improve public health through the design of urban spaces, or create automatic drone delivery systems to distribute medical supplies in rural or low resource environments.

Beyond healthcare, you could explore ways to use AI to drive sustainable development, through the optimisation of food production methods, or natural resource allocation.

Or you could work as an integrated machine learning systems engineer, creating and refining the hardware – from sensors to data centres - that makes any of this possible.

Whichever path you choose, at UCL you’ll find the guidance, expertise and facilities you need. Our AI centres and research groups (including the Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit and the cross-faculty Centre for Computational Statistics and Machine Learning) are dedicated to foundational research that secures AI as a positive force for people and planet.
