Why should you choose a UCL biochemical or chemical engineering degree?

  • University of the Year 2024. Awarded by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide, we’re also ranked 9th globally in the latest QS World University Rankings (2024).
  • Explore commercial opportunities and manufacturing applications. In the Manufacturing Futures Lab at UCL East, our chemical and biochemical engineers are heavily involved in developing manufacturing technologies for chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and functional materials for a carbon-constrained future.
  • Industry partnerships and connections. UCL Engineering is proud to work in partnership with world leaders across a wide range of industries. 75% of our biochemical research is conducted as an industry collaboration, and many of our programmes involve working alongside practitioners and experts from our industry partners.
  • Real world research impact. Whether we’re setting the world record for the fastest data transmission rate, or helping scale up the manufacturing of the COVID-19 vaccine, the impact of our research continues to be felt all over the planet.
  • Study in one of the world’s greatest capital cities. London is ranked as the world’s most student-friendly location, according to QS Best Cities Ranking 2025. We've got engineering campuses in historic Bloomsbury, and a new UCL East campus in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, with world-class laboratory and workshop facilities.
  • Dedicated careers support. The UCL Careers Guidance team is there to support you throughout your degree and for three years afterwards.

Discover world-class facilities and global challenges at UCL Biochemical Engineering and UCL Chemical Engineering

Advance your career at the frontiers of technology and research, with our portfolio of biochemical engineering and chemical engineering degrees.

As a postgraduate student at UCL Chemical Engineering, you’ll develop your expertise and explore groundbreaking research (with 97% of our output classed as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework) into some of the most urgent challenges facing people and planet.

At the UK’s longest-established chemical engineering department, you'll get to explore the solutions chemical engineering can provide to problems posed by energy systems, carbon dioxide emissions, advanced materials, sustainable manufacturing, health and environment.

You’ll also work in collaboration with multinational industrial partners such as GlaxoSmithKline and Jaguar Land Rover.

If you’d rather pursue a career in bioprocessing, biotech, stem cell research or synthetic biology, you’ll find a world of opportunities waiting for you in UCL Biochemical Engineering.

You’ll join a department equally ahead of its time – and also the first of its kind in the UK – that attracts the best and brightest academics in the field (75% of department staff rated ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’, REF 2021).

You’ll enjoy access to some of the finest bioprocessing research facilities in the world, with a suite of laboratory automation platforms and the only university-owned bioprocess pilot plant in the UK. Our research and industrial grant income currently stands at over £60m, supporting over 160 doctoral and postdoctoral researchers.

As part of our biochemical engineering community, you’ll be well looked after by the Interdisciplinary Advanced Centre for Biochemical Engineering (ACBE). This singular facility offers bioprocess research and training collaborations with more than a dozen UCL departments, a similar number of external university partners and over 40 international companies.

Whether it’s hydrogen fuel cells and propulsion systems, or DNA design and gene-editing with tools like CRISPR/Cas9, our chemical and biochemical engineering degrees will give you a stake in any number of possible futures.
