Why should you choose a UCL healthcare engineering degree?

  • University of the Year 2024. Awarded by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide, we’re also ranked 9th globally in the latest QS World University Rankings (2024)
  • Postgraduate support from the UCL Institute of Healthcare Engineering. In partnership with NIHR and UCLH, the Institute provides training and career development opportunities and events, networking and knowledge exchange opportunities and pump-priming for projects to help you fulfill your healthcare engineering goals.
  • Industry partnerships and connections. UCL Engineering is proud to work in partnership with world leaders across a wide range of clinical settings and biomedical industries. Many of our programmes involve working alongside practitioners and experts from organisations who partner with us.
  • Real world research impact. Whether we’re developing 3D-printed personalised support braces, or engineering a prototype COVID-19 breathing aid in just four days, the impact of our research continues to be felt by patients all over the planet.
  • Study in one of the world’s greatest capital cities. London is ranked as the world’s most student-friendly location, according to QS Best Cities Ranking 2025. We've got engineering campuses in historic Bloomsbury, and a new UCL East campus in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, with world-class laboratory and workshop facilities.
  • Dedicated careers support. The UCL Careers Guidance team is there to support you throughout your degree and for three years afterwards, maximising your chances of finding a career or academic position suited to your postgraduate qualifications.

Discover your future in healthcare engineering at UCL, with the largest biomedical research cluster in Europe

Join UCL, and you’ll play a pivotal role in finding the clinical applications for technologies that are defining the 21st century – innovations like quantum computing, nanotechnology and AI.

As a healthcare engineering postgraduate, you’ll be joining an institution that’s spent more than 100 years using science to change lives and fight back against illness and injury.

You’ll work side-by-side with world renowned experts in medical physics, bioengineering and pharmaceuticals, learning how to design, test and commercialise medicines and surgical interventions that push the boundaries of what can be treated.

On many of our postgraduate programmes, you’ll enjoy unparalleled access to clinical settings and expertise, through our extensive partnership with UCLH - the University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This 30-year collaboration between UCL and the NHS is home to one of the largest NHS Trusts in the UK, with over 200 active clinical trials at any one time.

You’ll get to explore and contribute to research that’s improving the lives of patients worldwide, whether that’s 3D-printed prosthetic limbs or quantum sensors that measure minute changes to magnetic fields in the brain – potentially detecting early markers of Alzheimer’s disease.

Ranked 1st in the UK for digital health publications (HealthXL’s Digital Health Evidence Report 2019) and 2nd in the world for biological sciences (Shanghai Rankings 2023), we’re always looking to the future, and exploring new opportunities with our partners, such as the Q-BIOMED centre we’ve founded jointly with the University of Cambridge.

We can also give you the industry experience, finance and business skills to help you bring innovative new solutions to market. You’ll be supported to translate your research and prove the value of your medical engineering with help from UCLB, our university’s commercialisation company which has helped launch more than 75 spinouts, including Endomag, Achilles Therapeutics and Altimmune.
