The Global Health 50/50 data library, housed at UCL, is the most comprehensive global tracking programme for Covid-19’s impact by sex.

New funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will allow data to be collected from a growing number of countries. This funding was secured with support from UCL Consultants (UCLC), part of UCL Innovation & Enterprise.

The ‘Sex, Gender and Covid-19’ research is the initiative of Professor Sarah Hawkes, UCL Institute for Global Health, and her team. Their results already show a difference in the effects of the virus on men versus women, in a pattern that’s repeated in nearly all of the 120 countries reporting data.

The expansion of the research will include capturing statistics from India by liaising at state level. The team will also workwith the African Population and Health Research Centre in Kenya to reach a further 20 African countries.
