My PhD Title: : Quality and equity of primary healthcare services in relation to communicable diseases in children and non communicable diseases in adults in the south-west zone of Nigeria- a mixed method study

Lay summary: Globally, the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is rapidly increasing, and the African continent may be the most affected region in the world. Current projections indicate that by 2020, the largest increase in NCD-related deaths will occur in Africa and by 2030; NCD-related deaths will exceed (by 75 %) the combined deaths from communicable diseases, nutritional, maternal and neo-natal deaths. Chronic conditions like hypertension are common among both rural and urban populations in Nigeria. More than half of the 170 million people in Nigeria live in rural areas and the primary health care (PHC) facility is usually the only source of formal health care available to them. Many clients who use PHC facilities in rural Nigeria may have hypertension yet they often go undetected and untreated. My PhD studies aims to explore ways to improve detection and care of hypertension at the primary care level by suggesting a model for risk assessment, curative and health promotion services in primary care in Nigeria. The study population will be PHC clients and PHC workers in FCT, Abuja. The results of this study will feed into the content of a proposal for model of care for hypertension at primary care level in Nigeria.
My Background: I graduated as a medical doctor in 2007 then went on to get the MSc in international public health from Liverpool John Moores University in 2012. I choose the international health pathway because I wanted to be armed with adequate knowledge to do global health development work especially as it relates to improving primary health care in developing countries. One of the high moments in my career was when I was awarded a Nigerian national youth honours award for my contributions to health development of the community where I did the 1 year compulsory national youth service in Nigeria. With this award, I was given a scholarship for my masters and PhD by the government of Nigeria. I am currently based at the department of Primary Care and Public health at the University College London. I am in my 3rd year PhD and hope to finish in 2018. My research works seeks to find innovative ways to improve the care for non-communicable diseases (particularly hypertension) at the primary health care level in Nigeria.
