How can Blackness and marginalisation as experienced across centuries be performed and visualised through film? We will be screening three films – including the premier of the UCL-produced Morcashani – introduced by the scholars/producers.

How can Blackness and marginalisation as experienced across centuries be performed and visualised through film? To answer this we will be screening short films, including blak mistrys by Candace Scarborough and the premiere of the UCL-produced Hearing Ghosts: The Life & Times of Josephine Morcashani by Graham Riach and Jeff Bowersox. We will also feature a performance by Helen McDonald. Discussants will include Jane Kingsley-Smith (Roehampton), Duncan Salkeld (Chichester), and Jeff Bowersox (UCL).

Hearing Ghosts: The Life & Times of Josephine Morcashani by Graham Riach (premiere 2024)
What did it take for a Black British performer to become a music hall star? The UCL-produced film Hearing Ghosts excavates the career of Josephine Morcashani, examining her shapeshifting performance style that played with race and gender stereotypes, and asks why we know so little about her now.
Hearing Ghosts will be followed by a live, original performance by Helen McDonald, inspired by Morcashani’s work.
