Andrew Wilson shares insights on Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference

15 October 2024

The UCL European Institute worked with the EU Delegation to the UK to mobilise UCL expertise to inform a panel on Ukraine as part of their annual conference on Foreign information manipulation and interference (FIMI) as a global threat.

Foreign information manipulation and interference (FIMI) as a global threat

Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI) has become an increasingly serious challenge for today’s democratic societies, especially as over one and a half billion people have voted or are preparing to vote in 2024. This highlights the urgent need to protect democracy. The fourth edition of the London FIMI Forum, organised by the EU Delegation to the UK on 14 October 2024, directly addressed these pressing concerns. With such a significant portion of the global population participating in elections, safeguarding democratic processes from foreign interference has never been more critical.

Andrew Wilson, Professor of Ukrainian Studies, School of Slavonic and East European Studies joined a panel with Daryna Harib from the Centre for Countering Disinformation of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine to discuss what lessons can be learned from Ukraine on how FIMI, Russia's key weapon of war can be countered. The session was chaired by Jessica Cecil.
