Module registration for students from other UCL departments

Students (incl. Affiliates) from other departments at UCL are welcome to request our modules on the understanding that:

  • They have permission from their main department at UCL
  • There is space on the module
  • There are no timetable clashes with their other modules
  • They meet any prerequisites required by individual modules (see our module descriptions)

How to request modules in SELCS

Undergraduate modules
If you would like to request a SELCS module, you should check that you meet any pre-requisites (outlined on the module catalogue) and that the module does not clash with any of your other modules. You should then select the module on Portico.  The SELCS Teaching and Student Support team will review your request and the outcome will be communicated to you via Portico.

Postgraduate modules

SELCS/CMII postgraduate (level 7) modules are not open to undergraduate affiliate students.

If you are a postgraduate taught affiliate student, and you would like to request a SELCS module, you should check that you meet any pre-requisites (outlined on the module catalogue) and that the module does not clash with any of your other modules.  You should then select the module on Portico.  The SELCS Teaching and Student Support team will review your request and the outcome will be communicated to you via Portico.

Module Approval

We aim to confirm whether you have secured a place on requested modules by the end of induction week (first week of term). We recommend that you have reserve options in place in case it is not possible for us to allocate you to requested SELCS modules.

Although we try to fulfil module selection requests, due to the number of students taking SELCS/CMII modules and the complexity of the programmes and modules we offer, we are not always able to do so.  Where we need to decline module selections, and these decisions must be considered final.

SELCS does not operate a waiting list system for modules and does not have capacity for students to audit modules.

Changing Modules

As per point 10 of the module selection instructions, you can request changes after you have submitted your module selections by going to the My Studies tab on Portico and clicking the Change module button next to the optional module you want to change.

If you would like to change onto a SELCS module, please refer to ‘Undergraduate modules’ or ‘Postgraduate modules’ above.

If you intend to drop a SELCS module, please note that we cannot guarantee that a place will be available to you on that module at a later date.
