Kinaesthetic cities: public spaces and everyday practices of sport and fit

About the lecture

Cities are full of people engaged in all sorts of physical fitness and sporting activity. People climbing, running, cycling, swimming, dancing, playing, training, jumping, crawling, skating, balancing, skipping, racing, diving, fighting, wrestling, and walking. This talk examines the ways social researchers study the entanglement of city life with these popular practices of sport and fitness. It looks at the distinctive ways such practices animate urban public spaces, as well as how they might help make for more inclusive, healthier, cities.

About the speaker

Alan Latham is a Professor of Human Geography at University College London. His research focuses on social infrastructures and the public life of cities. He is a Co-Editor of the Journal Royal Geographical Society Journal Area.

Inaugural Lecture Series 2023/24

This lecture is part of the 2023/24 series for UCL's Department of Geography. The series provides an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the achievements of our professors who are undertaking research and scholarship of international significance and offers an insight into the strength and vitality of the arts, humanities and social sciences at UCL.

All our lectures are free to attend and open to all. You don't have to be a UCL staff member or student to come along.

Lectures begin at 6:15pm and are typically one hour long. A drinks reception will follow, to which everyone is welcome to join.
