The ‘The Hague Journal of Diplomacy Article Award’ is presented annually to the article that best advances the theoretical and/or empirical study of diplomacy.

William and Jason’s article explores the role of materiality in space diplomacy.

Focusing on orbital docking technology, they looked at its evolution from the early days of space exploration to its use aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

Using assemblage theory, they propose a ‘more-than-human’ approach to diplomacy.

The research highlights how materials like androgynous orbital docking technology have created a sense of cooperation and peace among the multinational partners involved, from the Cold War era to the present day.

This approach offers a valuable alternative to conventional theories on space diplomacy, suggesting that diplomacy is shaped by non-human elements, which are integral to the processes of international collaboration.

The ‘The Hague Journal of Diplomacy Article Award’ is judged by a jury of experts from the journal’s Editorial Board, with the aim of celebrating and promoting cutting-edge research that advances the field of diplomacy.

William stated, “I'd like to thank the editors and contributors of the special issue on space diplomacy for provoking fantastic conversations in an emerging field.”
