Researchers in ExCiteS have created bespoke technologies to address the challenges around collecting, sharing and visualising geographic information with a variety of communities.

Our open-source mobile data collection platform (Sapelli) and web GIS API (GeoKey) are available for anyone to use and contribute to. Community Maps, a front-end visualisation platform, is available as one of a variety of services from Mapping for Change.

Our platforms link together not only through GeoKey, but are also able to connect to other web and mobile apps, with growing functionality.

For more information, check out further information on each below.

Sapelli

Sapelli is a new mobile data collection and sharing platform designed with a particular focus on non-literate and illiterate users with little or no prior ICT experience.

The platform plays a central role in ExCiteS’ mission – which is to develop theories, tools and methodologies to enable any community, anywhere to engage in citizen science.

Its key features are to set up data structures, user rights management, photo and video upload, discussions and a REST API to access and share data.

Community members can use GeoKey to setup their own mapping project and to collect, visualise and analyse data using their tools of choice.
