UCL Advancement 2021-22 review

Last financial year, new and existing philanthropic donors made gifts which enabled researchers across UCL to drive innovation, make new discoveries and create initiatives that are changing lives. Our donors are providing support that will ensure that UCL continues to attract the very brightest students and academics and that they are equipped to make a difference in the world. Philanthropy’s impact at UCL is growing at pace as we deepen relationships with donors seeking to create transformational change through their giving.

UCL Vice-President Advancement Angharad Milenkovic thanks the UCL community for their generous support of philanthropic activity in the last year.

In 2021-22, philanthropy at UCL has delivered:

  • £72.3 million in philanthropic gifts across every faculty

  • £57.2 million for research

  • £48.7 million in health research funding

  • £3 million for student support

UCL: an institution founded on philanthropy

Our first benefactors enabled the purchase of eight acres of land on which UCL would be founded in 1826. Nearly two centuries later, philanthropic income continues to provide life-changing scholarships for students, support world-leading academics and research, fund cutting-edge health advances and invest in new spaces and infrastructure.

UCL Advancement leads on fundraising and alumni engagement activity, in partnership with colleagues across the university. Our mission is to generate sustainable growth in philanthropic income, and to engage our global community of alumni, advocates and donors in support of UCL’s research, education and innovation objectives.

The impact of philanthropy at UCL

Philanthropy is powering our work at UCL through support for research projects, academic posts and students:

Engaging our global alumni community

UCL alumni are an integral part of UCL’s community, contributing their valuable time, money and expertise to help support our students, raise our profile globally, and drive our world-leading research. In 2021-22:

Alumni mentoring

Our skills-based alumni mentoring programme connects students with experienced graduates to help them develop the competencies, values, and professional habits which will allow them to thrive in any career. Last year 91 alumni mentored 101 students, 36% of whom were from Widening Participation backgrounds.

Graduation speaker

All 82 graduation ceremonies in 2022 have had an in person or virtual alumni speaker to congratulate the graduating classes and welcome them to the UCL alumni community, encouraging them to be active participants in the alumni network and to maintain their links to UCL as they embark on the next stage of their lives.

New York Alumni Reception

Supported 100+ alumni-led activities from reunions to international club events to professional networking opportunities all designed to help engage UCL’s alumni community of over 350,000 world-wide and encourage their participation as advocates for UCL around the globe.
