UCL GBSH student Rida Peerzada shares her top recommendations for networking whilst studying.

As I set out to join my MSc at the UCL Global Business School for Health, the first advice given to me by my professors and friends was to network as much as possible. Like lots of us are, I was initially intimidated by the thought of networking. As someone with quite a reserved character, I’ve always tried dodging such situations where you have to put yourself out there. However, there is also no denying that networking is an essential part of our professional lives. The question is, how do you network while studying? Here are some top tips to help you network!

Have an active LinkedIn profile:

Consider it your professional Instagram. Keep it active and updated. From newly hired employees to CEOs of major companies, LinkedIn gives you opportunity to connect and increase your know-how of the job market.

Connect with the faculty

Approach your lecturer after class and arrange a time to have an informal chat with them.T here's no doubt that the UCL GBSH lecturers have abundant knowledge and experience. They are always more than happy to share their experiences with you and provide some guidance on your career aspirations.

Attend social events organised by UCL

GBSH provides a great platform to network with peers and other professionals. From regular social events organized by the Student Union, weekly guest lectures, volunteering opportunities, and more, you’re spoilt for choice for networking opportunities at UCL.

UCL GBSH also offers regular networking events such as seminars from industry experts, drinks receptions and career events. Recently the GBSH hosted Phi Kim Ho at UCL East for a fascinating lecture on 'Technology Master Planning for Hospitals of the Future Followed' by a drinks and networking reception.

The GBSH is also hosting a Christmas networking event on Wednesday 14th December with nibbles and drinks! Calling all GBSH students, save the date! More information will be given shortly!

Join student societies or clubs

This is a great way to connect with like-minded people and advance your interests. With a mixed cohort, student societies can expand your network beyond your just your coursemates. Find out more about UCL societies here.

Utilise the UCL career service

UCL Careers provides services to enhance your skills and improve your job prospects. With a wide alumni network, connections with potential employers, and career adviser services, UCL Careers is a great stepping stone in your professional and networking journey. Find out more here.

At every step of the way, UCL and GBSH support students, so make sure to make the best of all the services provided by UCL. Now is the time to form good connections and build your network toward a successful future. Good luck!
