UCL Medical School welcomes Thailand’s HRH Princess Chulabhorn Mahidol
7 January 2019
The visit marks the completion of a jointly-developed medical education initiative designed to deliver high quality training to Thai doctors
Professor Dr Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Mahidol of Thailand visited the UCL Medical School (UCLMS) to celebrate the completion of a new jointly-developed medical education initiative, which will create a cohort of highly trained Thai doctors.
UCLMS has been working closely with the HRH Princess Chulabhorn College of Medical Sciences (PCCMS) to design a world-leading, contemporary undergraduate medicine degree programme, drawing on the UCL MBBS curriculum: a six year programme which equips students with the skills and qualifications to become competent doctors.
Addressing health challenges
Support for the establishment and development of the new programme is the latest example of UCL’s longstanding efforts to address health challenges in Thailand.
Among the delegation joining Her Royal Highness at UCL’s Bloomsbury campus for the celebratory event on 19 December were representatives from the Royal Thai Embassy, including His Excellency Ambassador Pisanu Suvanajata.
Long-term collaboration
As part of the joint initiative, UCLMS will continue to provide support over the coming years, including the provision of faculty development, quality assurance and assessment design and development.
Vice-Provost (Education & Student Affairs) Professor Anthony Smith and Deputy Director of the UCL Medical School, Professor Ann Griffin, were among UCL staff and students welcoming Her Royal Highness to the university.
Significant milestone
Professor Griffin said: “UCL Medical School is delighted to welcome back HRH Princess Chulabhorn for her fourth visit to UCL.
“This significant milestone has been made possible through strong academic collaboration and marks the beginning of an exciting six-year relationship: one which will culminate in producing the doctors of tomorrow for Thailand.”
Professor Smith said: “It is a great honour and pleasure to welcome HRH Princess Chulabhorn back to UCL to have discussions on progress on establishing the new undergraduate medicine programme at the HRH Princess Chulabhorn College of Medical Sciences”.
Her Royal Highness is a leading scientist in natural product research. Since 1985 she has been a Professor of Chemistry at Mahidol University and is founding President of the Chulabhorn Research Institute, a biomedical and chemistry research institute in Bangkok, Thailand.
